Pope Leo XIV to Undergo Surgery to Remove Lung Nodule

VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV has announced that he will undergo surgery in the coming days to remove a small nodule found in his lung during recent medical examinations.

The 71-year-old pontiff disclosed the development on Sunday, October 11, during his Angelus address at the Vatican, saying doctors detected the nodule at a very early stage and recommended surgery.

“During some recent medical examinations, the doctors found a localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well localized,” the pope said, according to Vatican News.

Leo XIV said he decided to follow his doctors’ advice and proceed with the operation, which has already been scheduled for the coming days.

He also thanked the faithful for their support and asked for their prayers ahead of the procedure.

Surgery planned at Rome hospital

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said the operation was scheduled for the first days of the coming week at Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital.

The Vatican expects the pope’s hospital stay following surgery to last approximately one week, according to CBS News, citing the Associated Press.

Officials have not disclosed further details about the surgical technique or whether additional treatment will be necessary.

The announcement comes as the pope continues his duties as leader of the Catholic Church, which has more than a billion faithful worldwide.

What is a lung nodule?

A lung nodule is a small area of abnormal tissue in the lung that may be discovered during medical imaging or other examinations.

Lung nodules can have several causes, including previous infections, inflammation and, in some cases, cancer. Their discovery does not automatically mean that a person has cancer.

The Vatican has not said whether the pope’s nodule is benign or malignant. The publicly available information indicates that doctors detected it early and recommended surgical removal.

Pope asks for prayers ahead of procedure

Following the announcement, Leo XIV expressed gratitude to those who had offered spiritual support as he prepared for surgery.

“I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers,” he said.

The Vatican has not announced whether the procedure will affect the pope’s upcoming schedule. Further updates may clarify his recovery and any changes to planned engagements.
