Typhoon Champi could regain super typhoon strength before entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Tuesday, October 20, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
In its 11 a.m. bulletin on Monday, October 19, PAGASA reported that Champi had maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour near its center, with gusts reaching 215 kph.
The storm was located about 1,600 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon as of 10 a.m. and was moving west-northwestward at 20 kph. It remained outside PAR at the time of the bulletin.
Once it enters the country's monitoring area, the cyclone will be given the local name Rosal.
Wind Signals Possible Over Northern Luzon, Bicol
PAGASA said tropical cyclone wind signals could be raised over northern and eastern portions of Northern Luzon and parts of the Bicol Region as early as Monday evening or Tuesday morning.
Under the current forecast scenario, the highest potential warning level is Signal No. 3 or 4.
Gusty conditions may also affect most of Luzon and the Visayas, along with portions of Mindanao, beginning Wednesday. Heavy rainfall is expected over Extreme Northern Luzon, according to the weather bureau.
Rough Seas Expected in Several Coastal Areas
Moderate to rough seas may begin affecting the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon, as well as the eastern seaboards of the Visayas and Mindanao, by Tuesday.
From Wednesday onward, very rough to very high seas may develop along the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon. PAGASA said it expects to issue a gale warning on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.
These conditions could pose risks to fishing boats and other vessels, particularly smaller craft operating in affected waters.
Champi Forecast to Move Toward Taiwan
PAGASA expects Champi to continue moving west-northwestward as it approaches and enters PAR, then track toward Taiwan while remaining over the Philippine Sea.
The cyclone may strengthen again beginning Monday evening or Tuesday and could regain super typhoon status. A gradual weakening trend is forecast to begin Wednesday after it reaches peak intensity.
Residents, particularly those in northern and eastern Luzon and parts of Bicol, are advised to monitor official PAGASA bulletins and follow guidance from local disaster risk reduction offices as the forecast develops.
