As millions of Filipinos prepare to travel for Undas, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is strengthening road safety operations nationwide and reminding motorists to take precautions before heading to cemeteries and their hometowns.
In a report published Wednesday, October 28, the PNP said it had ordered police units to increase patrols along major highways, accident-prone roads, cemetery routes and transport terminals to help prevent road accidents and assist travelers.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. also directed police units to conduct information campaigns encouraging motorists to check their brakes, tires, lights and other essential vehicle components before traveling.
More than 72,000 personnel to be deployed
The police force is deploying more than 72,000 personnel nationwide for this year's Undas, with additional support expected from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Coast Guard, local government units and other groups.
The PNP will be under full alert status from October 30 to November 2.
Nartatez emphasized that police visibility alone cannot prevent every road accident. He urged motorists to observe traffic rules, avoid speeding and distracted driving, and remain cautious on downhill roads, sharp curves and congested routes.
Authorities warn against fake priests
Meanwhile, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) warned the public about individuals allegedly posing as priests or authorized religious ministers and offering prayers or blessings in exchange for money.
The NCRPO advised cemetery visitors to verify the identity and affiliation of anyone claiming to be a priest by contacting cemetery administrators or the appropriate parish or diocese.
Authorities also reminded the public not to hand over money or personal information when a person's identity cannot be confirmed.
As Undas travel picks up, police are urging the public to plan trips carefully, follow traffic advisories and remain vigilant throughout the observance.
